I shouldn’t be surprised that I only have 3 followers since I never post anything here. But what the fuck…(what the fuck). I’m writing now and believe it or not, you are reading it. Whoa! Where should I start? I don’t even know how long it’s been since I’ve written here. I guess I’ll start by saying I’ve been keeping myself busy with my podcasts, comedy shows and musical performances. I am currently doing 2 podcasts, which most of you already know.

The TAG Cast Podcast, which is now heard in over 80 countries, is in it’s 4th Season. Tomorrow’s humpday episode(featuring Jim from Norska) will be our 145th episode. For those of you that are not in the know, The TAG Cast is a Comedy Podcast co-hosted by myself and my partner Dustin Gatchell. We do 3 episodes a week, every Mon-Wed-Fri. We talk about pop-culture, odd news stories and talk about the Oregon Comedy scene as well as the Oregon Music scene. We have guests on the show, usually more than once a week, in the form of local comedians, musicians, artists and friends. We are available on iTunes, Stitcher, TuneIn Radio, Dudes Chillin’ Network and our website, www.tagcastpodcast.com. There you will find links to all our social media outlets(Facebook, Twitter, Tumble, etc.), as well as a link to shop on Amazon through our site, kicking us a little revenue to keep our shows going.

The Zappa Tag Cast is a podcast where Gatch & I dissect each and every album released by Frank Zappa and the Mothers Of Invention, in chronological order. There are nearly 100 releases and we are on episode 30 right now, which covers the 1982 release Ship Arriving Too Late To Save A Drowning Witch. We have also done 3 bonus episodes(aka/bonusodes). 2 of which focus on Oregon-based Zappa tribute band Pojama People. The other is a tribute to the late Ray Collins. Zappa Tag Cast is also available on iTunes, Stitcher, TuneIn Radio, Dudes Chillin’ Network and our website, www.zappacast.com.

And at some point, I am going to try to start my own monologue podcast, where I just talk to you, the listener, about whatever the fuck I want…(whatever the fuck I want). So keep your ears open for that, in the not-near-to-distant-future.

Ok…enough about all that shit. Just a second. I need to take a quick bh’er. I’ll be right back.

Alrighty. What else have I been doing? I have done a couple shows with my latest band, Bikini, and I have been doing some comedy. Not as much as I’d like but I have done sets in Portland, Salem, Corvallis and Eugene(about 20 so far this year). I entered and lost 2 comedy competitions in Eugene. In a few weeks I’ll be doing the Helium Comedy Competition in Portland. That will be fun! Um…what else? We taped an episode of Grillin’ With Mac(a web series) with Chris Castles and Mac Chase, in whiçh we “grilled” my old leg. Watch for that on youtube sometime soon. Also I’be been appearing sporadically on The Donkey Show(101.5 FM KFLY). Also did my first couple of “clean” comedy shows with more of those to come.

Lastly, I can say I will definitely be hitting a ton more open mics AND showcases in Portland, Salem and Eugene, now that I have an economical vehicle to drive. May 21st will be 2 years since I did my first showcase. So I’m still a little baby comic. Only 2. That’ll be right around the time I’ll be advancing in the Helium contest.

Hope you fuckers have a wonderful evening and if you are looking for some comic relief, go to www.dudeschillin.com. 24/7 podcast network. It’ll make ya smile.

Such A Vicious Game

I’ve been involved in the Oregon comedy scene now for about 18 months. I’m not totally involved full time, but I have done around 75 shows around the state and have met quite a few of the local comics in the process. While I have noticed that there is quite a bit of comradery in the scene, I’ve also noticed that there is plenty of spiteful backstabbing and trash-talking. I’ve been in the NW music scene for over 20 years, and while there are several cases of backstabbing and trash-talking there as well, it just seems to be way more vicious in the comedy scene. Have any other comics noticed this or am I just crazy(don’t answer that…I know I am)? I haven’t experienced much of this personally, towards myself(yet), but I have heard it alot at shows, seen it on facebook’s “flame wars” and heard stories from comics who have been involved in such drama.

I was curious if and when this type of stuff happens in the bigger cities and scenes, if it is more intense or if the comradery is better in the larger regions? It seems it would be more dramafied in the bigger markets because there is so much more at stake? Everyone says that if you want to “make it” as a comedian on the large scale, you have to move to LA or NewYork. I could only imagine that since the scenes are so much larger there, that there would only be more intense “flame wars” and more jealousy causing more trash-talking and spiteful behavior.

I know this type of thing happens in every arena, but it seems to be a little more intense in the comedy scene. Does anyone agree? Or am I just a nutbag?

The Zappa Tag Cast

The Zappa Tag Cast

The TAG Cast Podcast

The TAG Cast Podcast

Photo

The TAG Cast Podcast with Terry and Gatch

The TAG Cast Podcast with Terry and Gatch:
Heaven’t been here FOREVER!!! I’ve just been super busy living and doing my thing. Since I was last here, my podcasting partner, Gatch, and I have wrapped up Season One of the TAG Cast Podcast. We did 26 regular episodes and 7 bonus episodes, leaving us with nearly 36 hours of podcasting gold. Our schedule for Season One was a new regular episode every Wednesday and Friday. As demand increased, we started doing an occasional Bonus Episode, which we call “bonus-odes”. That ended up turning into an “every Monday” type-deal, so during Season 2, we will be doing 3 regular episodes per week(M-W-F) with occasional bonus-odes for special occasions.

We will be having more guests on the show in Season 2 in the form of some local comics, musicians and we hope to be getting some bigger names on the show as well. So far, we have people like Don Thorpe from the band Fate ‘55, Oregon comedians Jesse Priest and Will Woodruff, as well as return visits from former guests like Seth Milstein, Dave Wombacher and Jerry Murphy. We will also be introducing a semi-fulltime correspondent in the form of Barry O’ Toole, fromerly from Boston(the town, not the band).

We have had great support from our sponsors in Season One, with ad campaigns for Complete Ag Resolutions, the Dixie Creek Saloon, Willamette Valley Local Music Scene and more. We are currently looking for additional sponsors for Season 2, so if you are interested, hit us up at contact@tagcastpodcast.com. We have very affordable rates starting as low as $5 and our listener base has been constantly growing as the word gets out.

We have also added a new show to the TAG Cast Podcast Family in the form of the ZappaCast, a shorter, 20 minute podcast focusing on the individual releases of Frank Zappa and the Mothers Of Invention. The first “sneak-peak” of Episode 1 is available now at www.zappacast.com. We will be proceding in chronological order covering every release(sans greatest hit compilations) in great detail. A “must listen” for ALL Zappa fans.

And we have been getting some new TAG Cast listeners that have been migrating over from the ZappaCast, which has been getting WAY more attention than the TAG Cast simply because of the huge legacy that Frank and the Mothers left behind. Here’s an example of the contrast: In 13 weeks, the TAG Cast obtained 103 likes on our facebook page. In 2 days, the Zaapa Cast is already up to 233 likes. In 2 days. So we’ll see what kind of download numbers come from the Zappa Cast. I have a feeling that it will very quickly eclipse the TAG Cast. But that is ok with me. I am just glad to get the Zappa information out to people who aren’t knowing.

Friday, August 17th will be the Season One wrap-up show, where we will revisit all the previous episodes for highlights, talk about milestones and guests, as well as get you ready for Season 2. You should definitely check that out!!

Then, after you listen to that, you should all head up to Portland to the Bagdad Theater, where I’ll be doing comedy. It starts at 10pm and costs only $5 to get in. It’s gonna be awesome…you should really try to make it out!!

That was my longest blog entry in quite some time, so I’ll probably share this on facebook so you all can come read it!!

Cheers~

It’s basically the Terry And Gatch Podcast, aka/TAGcast. We talk about stuff on Episode One, which will be up in a couple days or so. We’re gonna try to do it weekly for now.

So I’ve gone and done it… Entered Helium’s...

So I’ve gone and done it… Entered Helium’s Comedy Contest. Now THIS is a competition. Supposed to be up to 140 competitors in the prelims. I encourage anyone who’s been doing comedy for any substantial amount of time to enter, even if you feel you don’t have a chance of winning. Not only is it a great opportunity to perform at a professional comedy club, but it helps you grow and learn by seeing top notch comics work their magic, and you never know…you just might have what it takes to take this whole thing!

It’s only $20 to enter and you get a $15 Helium voucher at your initial prelim. So basically, it’s like 5 bucks.

Helium: Oregon’s Premier Comedy Club!! Even if you don’t enter, you should try to come check out some if the competition. The preliminaries run from May 29th-June 8th. The finals are June 9th & 10th. Come watch Portland’s Funniest Person emerge from the masses. And if you’re not into that, check out their website, http://www.heliumcomedy.com, for details on tons of national headliner comedians that do shows in Portland.

And, I know I’m not supposed to start a sentence with and. That’s not what I was going to write. I was going to write this:

R.I.P. Adam “MCA” Yauch. Cancer is a Dick!! Couldn’t it have taken like Scott Stapp or Chad Kroeger? FUCK!!

Photo

Well it’s been over a month since my last blog entry so I figured it was time to write. Had...

Well it’s been over a month since my last blog entry so I figured it was time to write. Had another great month of comedy and got this here blog mentioned at a couple shows. I doubt that it garnered any new followers but you never know.

Got to do a few new rooms this month including Bagdad Theater and Tik Tok Lounge in Portland and my first all ages comedy show at the Wandering Goat in Eugene. Those were fun. Also competed in the Willamette Valley Comedy Competition and made it into the finals. Had a lot of stiff competition. I placed 7th out of about 35 Oregon comics. Of course they only had prizes for the top 6. And the top 5 were all from Portland. Anyway, never thought I’d even make the finals let alone win, so it wasn’t too much of a let down. It was a great experience. I’ll enter again next year if I’m still doing this, and I don’t see any reason why I wouldn’t be.

Upcoming endeavors include another show at the Bagdad with Tristian Spillman and Friends, May 10th, and my first show at the Green Room in Eugene with Will Woodruff and Chris Castles on May 19th. Coming up in a couple months I’ll be putting on the Dixie Creek Saloon’s Comedy Showcase #2 with one of my favorite headliners from Portland, Don Frost. That will be July 7th also featuring Seth Milstein, Joshua Finch and Karmichael McG.

Also coming soon, will be the Stand Up On One Leg Podcast with me and my podcast sidekick, Sick Daddy himself, Dustin Gatchell. We are going to try to do the “pilot” episode next week and eventually turn it into a weekly show. Plans for the show include our comedic take on the entertainment world, music, weed and comedy, as well as promoting local shows in the Oregon area. That will only be a small part though, as we plan to take this bitch TOTALLY GLOBAL!! The majority of the show will just be our fucked up views on society as we know it with plenty of comic relief. We aim to create a podcast that we not only enjoy making, but that we would also enjoy listening to even if we weren’t a part of it. So it’s for us, and you. Cuz we’re all about equality man…I mean brother. Anyway, should be able to catch me at a few open mics as well this month at places like Taylor’s and the Green Room in Eugene and I’m gonna try to pull of the triple or quadruple dip in Portland some Tuesday night soon.

Hope to see some of you out there as there are plenty of opportunities for you to check out some live stand up comedy. Be sure to follow me on Twitter, @TerryGeil and check out my facebook page at www.facebook.com/TerryandDannaGeil for all the details on my upcoming comedy performances.

Thanks for reading and I’ll check back in in a few weeks unless something totally awesome happens between now and then.

Laugh hard….

I did a show in Corvallis, ended up going last and did about 25 minutes and felt really good about it. The set that is…not the fact that I did 25 minutes. I feel much more comfortable doing 10-12 minutes. But on Tuesday, I hit the Helium Comedy Club’s open mic night, and it was a gas(pun intended). There were probably 50 or more people in the audience and the only one I knew was my wife(aside from the few comics there that I knew). Which was pretty cool as I usually do shows where there are a lot of people I know there. So I went up 8th of about 20 comics. I was a bit worried about the 3-minute set, as I had never done one, however I had prepared and practiced my set for time purposes. I had been given very useful advice from many colleagues to not go over my time and actually witnessed a guy(who wasn’t doing well anyway) go over his time and get his mic cut. Very embarrassing and duly frowned upon by the club, usually prompting them to not allow them back onstage for a few weeks. There is one thing I tremendously enjoyed about Helium. The stage lights are bright and the crowd area is totally dark, thus allowing you to look directly into the audience without actually having to see their faces. This makes is way easier to not look at the ground or ceiling, whilst keeping your eyes partially closed for indefinite periods of time. I waited in the green room for my time, and I must say, waiting in the wings while the host is introducing you is awesome. A severe rush of endorphins and butterflies fluttering in your stomach. Then you hear your name, come through the curtain, and after the first quick joke gets a good laugh, the anxiety turns into an overwhelming feeling of power and accomplishment. The entire audience’s eyes and ears are on you. They are responding to your word with laughter and applause. That’s when things seem a little fogged and/or blurry as the glory.of working a crowd takes over. Then you see the red light on the back wall and realize you are right on par. Time to move to the final closing bit hoping to.make it through without rushing before the light starts flashing. Say your final punchline and while the audience is starting to chuckle you say “That’s my time, you’ve been an awesome audience…see ya next time.” You return to the green room and, in my experience, the adrenalin returns bringing back the fluttering stomach and accelerated heartrate. I return to the audience to sit with my wife to enjoy the rest of the show, and on the way receive several kudos from people I respect, which makes it all worthwhile. Then the icing on the cake is when my best friend, soulmate and confidante tells me it was a “Great set! Perfect!!” It also just happened to be one year to the day that I had done my very first stand up performance.

5 days later I had my one year anniversary show and attempted my first headlining slot. I was shooting for 45 minutes but did just under 40 as the crowd was waning and it was getting late. But I was proud of myself. I had a lot of laughs and a few compliments after the show. There was a small tiff between a few of the comics at the end if the night, but luckily, for myself, I was somewhere else smoking weed and having a good old time. I’m pretty mellow and passive, so I try to stay removed from any drama. In my honest opinion, it was an awesome night and I thank the Dixie Creek Saloon and crew for their stellar hospitality.

Then on Monday it was back to Taylor’s in Eugene for Donkey Gong Comedy. Saw awesome sets by Andy Bradwin, Alex Elkin, Marcus Bridges, Seth Milstein and Chris Castles. Not to mention the constantly improving Drew Tydeman, the kickass host with the most. I kept my set short, reviving my Helium set with a couple added in bits and ending with a new bit about my medical Marijuana card holding brother and how picky he is. The grass is always greener in someone else’s bag.

The next two weekends I’ll be showcasing in Portland at Tik Tok on April 6th and the World Famous Cannabis Care on April 14th. April 19th I’ll be competing for the Willamette Valley’s funniest person contest prelims in Salem/Keizer at the Dugout. April 20th it’s back to Eugene for my first all ages comedy show at the Wandering Goat. Add that to 2 of my bands playing this month(21st & 28th) and one night of Karaoke hosting at the Calapooia Brewing Co.(25th), that makes for quite a busy month.

I think that is all for now….

Thanks for reading. I love you all!!

Cheers~

Come on down for the best FREE comedy show going on that night. And it’ll be my one year anniversary of standing up on one leg…and boy is my good leg getting tired. HA! Anyway, great line up including Will Woodruff, Jesse Priest, Dan Crall, Dean Clark as well as myself, Terry Geil, and our host for the evening, Dustin Gatchell.

So come down to the Dixie where you’ll see some up and coming comics doing their own material for no charge, or you could go see Carlos Mencia hack other people’s material for a large fee. Your call. Funny is funny and smart is smart.

Cheers~
